The Coach
Thirty-five years of teaching,learning, coaching, program design, and professional development presentation have laid the foundation for The Literacy Coach service.


Brian B. McLernan
Brian McLernan is the founder of The Literacy Coach. He has been an educator in the public schools of New York and the United States Virgin Islands since 1969. During those years he has taught Language Arts classes at every level between sixth grade and university. In addition Brian coordinated the performing arts and drama department of a large consolidated school district for four years, coached boy's and girl's basketball and track programs for more than twenty years, helped organize major school reform design projects, and, since 1995, conducted staff development institutes. He is a nationally certified trainer for Project Intercept, an NDN program. From 2004 to 2007, Brian served as the literacy coach at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School, on the Island of St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. During the 2005-06 school year, he was team leader for the BCBMS Adolescent Literacy Collaboratory team under the auspices of of the Lab at Brown University. For 2006-07 he served as Team Leader's Mentor for the entire Virgin Islands Collaboratory. Brian retired from the Virgin Islands Department of Education in August, 2007. From August through December, 2007, he created and facilitated the 11th Grade Literature and Writing Collaboratory at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic High School, in St. Thomas, VI. In February, 2008, Brian and his wife Cleo relocated to Broward County, FL where they will offer staff development programs about the Project Intercept Instructional Model and the Collaboratory Approach to Literacy instruction at public and private schools in the southeastern United States.
